Miyamoto said that the second one will be more challenging assuming players have played through the first and can handle it. Plus it'll have Yoshi. YOSHI!

OMFG YOSHI!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I want this game now. I love yoshi, all the way back in Super Mario World, I never played a level without a yoshi (except those dang castles, whos dumb idea was that?)

I'm definitely picking this one up on release day. ;P SMG was, like, fantastical.

I'mmashamed to admit, but I haven't collected all the stars in SMG yet...>.0

Nor have I ever collected all the stars in SM64...

I guess the main deal for me is beating Bowser xD and having the extra stars still there gives me some incentive to keep playing more.. (as opposed to never touching the game again, like I usually do when I totally beat a game...)

I have not played the first one. I really need to play that one too. If I can find one on ebay for around $25, then I'll pick the first one up.

But yeah, I'm pumped for the second one. Graphics-wise, it looks just as great as SMG, if not better, which is always great. The one surprising thing, is that they are making a second Mario game like this on the same console.

Yeah, I know it's basically a glorified expansion pack, and it reeks of "cash-in" on Nintendo's part, but I'm still excited about this game. SMG is one of my favourite games after all.

^ Yeah I agree, I think it shows nintendo is just as unsure of what will appeal to the entire wii audience. Mario is a very safe bet that the hardcore and the casuals all recognize and are willing to buy. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a cash in though, cause the first one had the same amount of content as the previous games. That said it is clearly a business decision rather than Miyamato wanting badly to make a second mario game.

I never accused the SMG 1 of being a cash-in.

Hence why I called this new game a cash-in. Don't think that's an entirely bad thing though, if it's half as good as SMG it'll be worth it.

Nah I didn't mean it that way, I thought you were saying SMG 2 should have been stuff included in the first one. I meant the game had equivalent content to previous mario games so SMG 1 didn't suffer. I guess I misunderstood what you meant. In the end I also think we're saying the same thing lol. But yeah, not going to argue their decision at all Wink

As I understand it, only a few stages were carried over from the original SMG right? (the bee suit is back~)

I can't wait to see what new worlds there will be~ I hope they really toughen up Bowser for this game (though fighting Bowser still kinda scares me regardless xD SM64 scarred me as a child!)

It was the music, the Mario 64 soundtrack was amazing.

“We’re in the middle of finalizing the game, the ideas that we’ve created, almost entirely new courses for Super Mario Galaxy 2. Of course we’ve added some new abilities for Mario. And the goal is to take the system and the gameplay of the original Super Mario Galaxy and turn it into something that’s a little more expanded and offers a great deal of challenge for people that enjoyed that first game.”

From Shigeru Miyamoto in an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine:

Quote
Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned, I think it's going to be a really challenging game, but whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell," Miyamoto told us. "In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit to anything specific right now

Yeah, I gotta get the first one too. But my Christmas stuff will probably either be PS3 stuff or money towards one.

Ha you know, I never bothered reading that first article until now, the interview with Miyamoto over the storyline. I have to say I agree with him >> I hope it's light and fun like Mario games should be~ (though the first SMG didn't deviate all that much, I'd say)

In any case, I haven't been keeping up with this one much... since there isn't any estimated date of release. Just 2010. Grin
